Why You Need to Start Using QR Codes
Where do QR codes come from? Are they actually useful in our marketing and advertising efforts? And why have we been seeing them all over the place recently?
QR codes are everywhere!
Think of a QR code as a fancy barcode scanned by aiming your phone’s photo app, directing users to places like websites, social channels, videos, and more. QR codes are a fast and easy way to deliver a lot of information to individuals in just one scan.
In social media, apps like Snapchat and Venmo offer users personalized QR codes linked to their profiles to easily follow and pay each other.
Restaurants are also utilizing QR codes, especially after the pandemic pushed many of them to use paperless menus. In 2020, out of the over one million restaurants in the United States, 52% of them were using paperless menu QR codes, according to Beaconstac.
QR codes are making their way onto packaging for all types of products as well. Companies like Hershey’s and JIGGY are putting QR codes on their packaging to direct consumers to ingredients, coupons, product directions, and more.
Be on the lookout for more brands who are adapting to this interactive smart packaging because this market is forecasted to reach $7.56 billion by 2023, according to research from Smithers Pira, The Future of Active & Intelligent Packaging.
QR codes rose to fame fairly recently
Even though QR codes were released to the public in 1994, they didn’t start gaining worldwide popularity until around 2017, when smartphone companies started to implement QR scanners into their phone cameras.
The 2020 global pandemic also caused a huge increase in QR code reach with an over 96% increase from 2018 to 2020 according to Blue Bite.
Are QR codes useful for marketing and advertisements?
Yes! In 2019, app downloads at Chick-fil-A increased by 14% after using QR codes in their digital signage.
At The King Agency, we’ve helped one of our clients, First Team Automotive, promote their Sell To First Team program through the use of QR codes. The codes are on everything, from handouts given directly to customers to hangtags that are placed in serviced cars. Since the middle of November 2021, they have received over 553 scans!
Even though these little codes don’t look like much, they are popping up everywhere. So if you haven’t started using QR codes to promote your business, consider using them as a part of your marketing solution.
